A 10-second video clip authenticated by blockchain sold for $6.6 million. “Everydays: The First 5,000 Days” is a collage by a digital artist Beeple whose real name is Mike Winkelmann.
“…so insanely excited to announce that Christie’s will be auctioning off one of my pieces. This will be the first time that a global auction house has auctioned off an entirely digital artwork with no physical component. I could not be more honored and humbled to be representing the digital art community for this historic sale.” Beeple said on his social media account in February 2021.
This new type of digital asset known as a NFT (non-fungible token) has exploded in popularity during the pandemic as enthusiasts and investors are spending enormous amounts of money on items that only exist online.
