UPDATE 12 JUNE 2021

Jeff Bezos announced the third passenger on its first crewed flight will be Wally Funk. At 82 years of age, she will be the oldest person ever to travel into space.

In 1961, Wally Funk was at the top of her class as part of the “Mercury 13” Woman in Space Program led by NASA astronaut physician Dr. Randy Lovelace. Despite completing their training, the program was cancelled, and none of the thirteen flew.

Funk underwent the same screening tests as NASA astronauts but never flew to space herself. “No one has waited longer. It’s time. Welcome to the crew, Wally. We’re excited to have you fly with us on July 20th as our honored guest” Jeff Bezos said on his social media account.

Mary Wallace “Wally” Funk was born on February 1, 1939. Mary Wally is an American aviator. Wally was the first female air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, the first female civilian flight instructor at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and the first female Federal Aviation Agency inspector, as well as one of the Mercury 13.
