The Oscars 2022 Awards Ceremony was disrupted by an incident between the actor Will Smith and the comedian Oscars presenter Chris Rock; after Rock made a joke about Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Actor and comedian Chris Rock was on the stage presenting the award for the best documentary when he started making jokes about members of the audience, including Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Chris Rock made a “G.I. Jane 2” joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. “Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see you,” the comedian said, about Jada’s shaved head and the film G.I. Joe, Demi Moore’s shaved head hairstyle. Jada Pinkett Smith has shared with her followers on social media that she has being diagnosed with alopecia and therefore decided to shave her head.

When Chris Rock made the “G.I. Jane 2” joke; Will Smith himself appeared to be laughing at first, but his reaction quickly changed. Will Smith then walked to the stage and slapped Chris Rock in the face. Will Smith returned to his seat and yell from his seat, “Leave my wife’s name out of your f***king mouth.”

Later on after the incident; Will Smith went on to win an Oscar in the Best Actor category for his performance in King Richard. During his acceptance speech, Will Smith took the opportunity to address the incident. Smith also shared with the audience that Denzel Washington told him, “In your highest moments, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you”.

Will Smith also apologised to the Academy and fellow nominees; “I want to apologise to the Academy. I want to apologise to my all my fellow nominees,” the actor said. “Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.”

FOLLOWING THE INFAMOUS SLAP:

* In a statement Will Smith said: “I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable,”

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,”

“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”

* According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Chris Rock decided not to press charges against Will Smith.

* Will Smith was banned from attending the awards ceremony for 10 years.

* In March 2023; comedian Chris Rock returned to Netflix with a new stand-up special “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage”; Netflix’s first-ever live event. Chris Rock delivered an electric stand-up set on non-racist yoga pants, spoiling his kids, the Kardashians and his thoughts on the Will Smith fiasco. Chris teased some jokes alluding to the slap by saying “words hurt. Anybody who says that words hurt has never been punched in the face.”
